TREATMENT OF MUD SLURRY USING COMBIGRID® 80/80 Q1 GEOGRID
MANJUNG POWER PLANT PROJECT
The Manjung coal-fired power plant, sponsored by Tenaga Janamanjung, is located on a man-made island off the coast of Perak in Malaysia. It generates 2,100MW from its three 700MW units. The plant is located 4.5m above sea level, making coal imports easier.
For the subsequent projects, Mudajaya Corporation Berhad were the Main Malaysia Contractor involved in this job. NAUE Asia worked closely with the Consultant for this project.
In one of the particular Ash Pond namely Pond A and Pond B, there was presence of colloidal mud slurry at seabed level. The new pond is bounded all-round by an existing containment bund. The mud slurry collection is reportedly caused by adjacent filling works done by other contractors. Thickness of mud slurry is reported vary from 0.65m to 1.8m.
Should there be no treatment to the existing situation, the ash pond will eventually fail.
In view of this, the Consultant proposed the use of 2 layers of Combigrid® 80/80 Q1 Geogrid at the base of the seabed. All relevant calculations on the application of Combigrid® 80/80 Q1 was carried out by the Consultant with the support and assistance of NAUE Asia.
